About Close the Gates

Close the Gates is our version of a pub dice game often played on a wooden box. Nine gates stand open, numbered one to nine. Each throw of the dice gives a total, and you close any open gates that add up to it exactly: a throw of nine could close the nine, or the five and the four, or the one, three and five.

You keep throwing and closing until a throw cannot be made from the gates still open. Then the round ends and the open gates are added up. Close every gate and the pip count is zero, which brings back the most; a few low gates left open still return something.

Two dice are thrown while any of the seven, eight or nine is open. Once all three are closed, a single die is thrown, so a small total stays possible to the end.

Which gates to close is a real choice. As a rule, closing the high gates early keeps the most throws useful later. Show the best gates works out the choice that leaves the best spread of throws for the rest of the round, by exact calculation rather than a rule of thumb.

How to play

  1. Pick a stake from 5 to 200 glints and press Open the gates. The first throw is made for you.
  2. Tap open gates that add up to the throw. The button lights when your choice matches.
  3. Press Close these gates. The next throw follows.
  4. When no open gates add up to a throw, the round ends and the pips left open decide what comes back.

Pay table

Every figure is what comes back for one glint staked; multiply by your stake. The count is the total of the numbers on the gates still open when the round ends. The numbers come straight from the data file the game itself reads.

Where to stop

Rounds here end on a throw you could not use, which can feel like bad luck rather than the natural end of the game. It is the natural end. If you catch yourself chasing a full close, take the round count as your cue.

Fair play

Your browser's built-in randomness settles each outcome the instant you press the button. Nothing is tuned to your glints, your history, the hour or the length of your session, and the chamber has no idea who you are. Across many rounds every chamber returns somewhat less than it takes in, which is how games of chance are built. Glints are worth nothing in money, so nothing real changes hands either way.

No round is ever bought: every chamber is free, glints cannot be purchased, and a free rekindle to 2,000 glints is there whenever you drop below 40. Playing or success here does not imply future success at real-money gambling.
